Wardrobe tips for your family photos

One of my most common questions is how to choose an outfit for our photoshoot, so I wanted to create an article with some tips. This info is geared towards families, but it can be applied to engagement shoots or photography for your business or brand as well.

The most important thing when choosing your clothing is that you feel like yourself and that you’re comfortable. You can absolutely dress up if you’d like to, but a well thought out casual outfit is great as well. I’ve been a romper gal for years, so I’m going to opt for one over a dress these days. Choose clothing that reflects your personality, fits well and makes you feel confident. I love to incorporate playfulness and movement into our shoot, so keep that in mind.

Think classic when planning your outfit. I want you to be able to cherish your photographs for years to come. I don’t jump on every trend that comes along. That’s why, when you’re looking through my portfolio, images I took ten years ago blend in seamlessly with the ones I take today. Finding an outfit that feels timeless is a great way to make your photos last.

When coordinating with your partner and kids, think of it as one big outfit. You can lay it all out on the bed together to see if it’s working. Rather than matching, you should aim to all be in the same color palette. If you’re not sure where to start, hop onto Pinterest and find a color palette that works for you. Here are a few that I love:

Some colors that photograph beautifully are: teal, turquoise, deep blue, maroon, rust, rose, mustard and deep and rich versions of green or purple. For neutral, warm browns and variations of beige are lovely and grey works well. Please avoid fluorescent colors (they don’t photograph well, and they can reflect onto your face changing your skin tone).

Think about our shoot location when choosing your colors. Choose colors that complement the location and provide contrast.

Props can add a fun and playful element to your session. If you have ideas, or would like ideas, let’s chat about it!

If you’re wearing fancy shoes, please bring a comfy pair to slip on while walking between shoot locations.

Please avoid loud patterns and logos. Subtle patterns work well when mixed with solids (but please avoid thin lines because they can make a strange pattern on camera). Make sure your clothing is clean and wrinkle free. Newer fabrics photograph best. When wearing a button up, please be sure the buttons don’t pucker. Accessories like scarves, belts and hats, are nice and add texture.

As always, I’m more than happy to go over outfit choices with you in advance for on location shoots. For shoots at your home, we can look at your options and choose something together.

Okay, I know this is about clothing, but I also have to mention SNACKS: I’m one of those hangry people they make the commercials for, so I always like to remind folks to bring along snacks and water. It can make such a difference in moods and energy when people have a happy belly.

Check out my mother’s day minis happening May 3rd & 4th!

I’ll get into details of working with a professional stylist when we do a shoot for your brand in another article.

I hope you found all of these tips helpful and I can’t wait to hear about your next photo project!

Adorable Family shoot in Newport Beach

I love being a part of my clients lives and photographing this sweet family was so meaningful to me. Years ago, I photographed Melissa and Ryan’s intimate and gorgeous wedding at the Fig House. If you want to read all about it, it was featured in Bridal Musings at that time so check it out! Since photographing their wedding, we became friends and I was really excited to photograph them with their two daughters. I had the best time with the girls as they showed me around their playroom, bounced on the trampoline and played in their front yard. I love photographing the sense of joy and freedom when children play.

Fall Engagement Shoot in Los Angeles

I love this sun soaked fall engagement shoot with Shirin and Tom from my archives. These two are so natural in front of the camera and I had the best time with them. There’s something magical about Franklin Canyon. The trees feel old and wise and the light streaks through them just right. It feels like an oasis far removed from the city tucked away in the hills. I love photographing there & I hope you enjoy these!

Romantic Hollywood wedding portraits

This is another shoot from the archives that I adore! When Alison and Garret let me know that we were going to be shooting at the Hollywood Roosevelt I was over the moon. I love the classic Hollywood vibe of the hotel. We were able to grab a few shots on their iconic rooftop as well as some in their moody bar setting (that felt a bit like a castle in some shots!)

These two are gorgeous together, I so enjoyed their company. I had the best time on this shoot & I can’t wait for you to check these images out.

Playful Maternity Shoot in Los Angeles

Last year, I was so busy shooting and editing that I’ve gotten behind on sharing my favorite sessions. Now I have a little more time in my office so I’m going through the archives to bring you some treasures.

I miss being able to do in home sessions! I think being in a couple’s space can make the photos feel personal and be a wonderful marker in people’s lives of a time and space. I’m looking forward to the passing of this pandemic so I can be safely in other’s spaces again; but for today, I’m happy to share this sweet in home maternity shoot in Los Angeles.

I just adore these two and their willingness to be playful. There are even guest appearances of one of their chickens their adorable pup. I hope you enjoy!

Beautiful Wedding in Huntington Beach

Photographing Paula & Eric’s wedding was such a delight. Being on the beach with a small group of their closest friends and family was both intimate and safe. I’m happy that these two found a way to honor their love with this laid back ceremony and thrilled to be a part of their love story. This year is full of challenges and uncertainty and celebrating love is more important than ever.

The absolute joy and adoration they have for each other was shining so brightly as they couldn’t stop beaming their entire portrait session. I hope you enjoy these photos and this post gives you a moment to pause and smile.

Colorful Anniversary Shoot in Downtown Los Angeles

I had the best time spending the afternoon with Loren and Joe. It was their ten year wedding anniversary and they wanted to do a photoshoot highlighting their love of each other, the city of Los Angeles, and their adorable pups Lincoln and Taft.

To get that urban and colorful vibe, we headed down to the arts district with its vibrant murals. Then we stopped by one of my favorite streets to see the downtown skyline before heading to picnic in Elysian Park. The day was filled with that wonderful LA sunshine and plenty of laughter and love.

Baby Grey

When my friend Valerie asked me to photograph her little one's first birthday celebration, I was so excited. As you can see, baby Grey is vibrant and her family is the sweetest.

It seems like just yesterday that I was doing Valerie's gorgeous milk bath maternity shoot and I can't believe that baby Grey is already one! Whenever I sit down to edit my photos, I remember why I love photography. Capturing those beautiful moments of connection get me every time.

Featured in Bridal Musings

I am thrilled to be feature in Bridal Musings this week. I love this romantic and beautifully laid out blog. I had so much fun looking back on Melissa and Ryan's wedding. I adore these two! We are neighbors and since their big day we have become good friends. I hope you have a moment to check out the article and read about their love story.

Dreamy Maternity Shoot

One of my favorite things about photography is the connection I feel with my subjects, and it's a truly special day when I get to work with dear friends. I'm so thrilled for Rachel + Rico and their little girl who will be arriving in the next few weeks. A stunning Rachel and I started our shoot in a soaking tub with a luxurious milk bath. I love how the the intimate setting focuses on her form.

I adore these two and the tenderness they share. It was an honor to both capture their love and this unique moment in time. This baby is going to be one lucky wee one and I can't wait to meet her!

We found a beautiful sun drenched path in the Hollywood Hills and there was a lovely little trail with a secret garden and wildflowers along the way. It was a sweet and leisurely stroll filled with laughs and kisses.

I am so excited for these two as they enter their next life adventure together.

Chasing Wildflowers

One of our favorite things to do when my mom comes to visit is road trip. I was feeling called to the desert so I planned a trip for us to check out Anza Borrego State Park. By a wonderful stroke of luck, our trip lined up with an explosion of wildflowers. Because of the wet winter, the California desert is experiencing a super bloom that was in it's full glory during our visit.

The whole region had a sweet smell to it. I've never experienced anything like it!

It sounds like the low elevation bloom has already peaked at Anza Borrego, but if you want to chase some wildflowers of your own, it's not too late! The bloom starts in the South and travels North. There are gorgeous poppies in Antelope Canyon and I'd imagine Joshua Tree is still going strong. Check out the wildflower report: desertusa.com/wildflo/ca.html

I find such inspiration being in nature. I've realized how important it is for me to get outside explore and have started to prioritize it over the last few years.

Most of these photos were taken around Borrego Springs area. We also did an incredible slot canyon hike called "The Slot" that I highly recommend.

A special thank you to my mom for her unwavering sense of adventure (and bonus points for getting up at dawn and helping with self-portraits).

Thanks for following along, and I hope you have a chance to play outside this week!

Manor Boudoir Shoot featured in Lace in Light

I'm so excited to share that our styled boudoir shoot is currently featured on the Lace in Light blog. Please take a moment to check out the article here:

Have a scroll down and enjoy some of my favorite images from the the day as well!

The York Manor was the lovely backdrop for our romantic images. I am lucky to have worked with the talented women who brought this shoot to life. I loved Claudia's beautiful styling choices, from the delicate lingerie to the gorgeous props. She wove last years colors of the year, Rose Quartz & Serenity seamlessly throughout the styling. Working with Jessica as a model was perfection. We had Leah on board as our talented makeup artist. And just wait until you see the incredible floral installation that brought magic and whimsy to the shoot! I was blown away by Valerie's vision. Scroll down for a full list of vendors.

Celebrating women and their femininity is something that has always been important to me. I love boudoir for that reason. I'm excited to offer boudoir shoots as an add on to a wedding package or as a stand alone shoot. Brides love to give a book to their partner with images from the shoot. However the true gift from the boudoir shoot is to the woman herself. She is empowered to embrace her body and celebrate her beauty.

Milk bath maternity shoot

Today I'm sharing a favorite shoot with you from the fall. When Valerie mentioned wanting a maternity shoot, a milk bath came to mind. I'd been seeing these gorgeous images on Pinterest for a while, and I'd been dying to try it. The morning of the shoot we headed down to the LA flower market to get some blooms. Valerie is a talented florist and it was a lot of fun to step into her world. There was so much to look at and the colors and smells were decadent.  I could not stop grinning ear to ear. I would definitely recommend heading down there for a fun wander.

A really fun aspect to the shoot was that it was such a relaxing experience. Being in a warm milk bath is like being at the spa. She loved it!

Check out Valerie's gorgeous floral work on her website: valeriejurado.com/

The milk bath was so much fun. I think it would be a gorgeous addition to a boudoir shoot as well. And a huge congratulations to this mama! She had a beautiful baby girl last week.
